pavlov's person
Pavlov was right. Of course we all know about his
dog and how it would salivate when he rang a bell that the dog
associated with dinner, but how often do we acknowledge that such a
simple matter of association can work with humans? We may not be
quite as high above hungry dogs as we thought. At least I might not
be...
When I started working at my job, my computer would make
a subtle "ding" sound any time I received an email, and I would know to
check my inbox. Since that time we've acquired another employee and he's
taken over my computer while I've stepped up to a laptop. And now, I'll
hear the "ding" from the computer across the room and I'll instinctually
check my email... all the time! I know the sound is completely unrelated
to anything going on with my email or my computer, but I think, "Well,
maybe there's a chance that I happened to get an email at the exact same
time!" C'mon, Kevin. You walk upright!
Yeah, well. Hope springs eternal. As does salivation.
