What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Let's
limit this to when you were 12 years old or younger. Mine by far was
Tom and Jerry. I'm not sure I appreciated then everything I
appreciate now, such as the hand-drawn quality, the detail of Tom's
hair and whiskers, the music, and above all the extremely simple plot:
cat tries to eat mouse.
Cartoons ain't what they used to be. Now the plot lines
actually involve plot! Now Tom and Jerry can talk! Now nothing is
hand-drawn. It seems for the most part like a cheap attempt to garner a
viewing by making a completely unartistic product that sells simply
because it's called "Tom and Jerry Kids." And isn't there "Flintstone
Kids?" And for a time there was "James Bond, Jr."
I still find Tom and Jerry entertaining. And it
begs the question of whether it has a particular
quality that remains untarnished by my growing older, or is it simply
association from my childhood? Do the people who thought "Tom and Jerry
Kids" was funny still think so? Will they still think so in 5 more years?
If so that's an argument for the association theory. It's the same
question with the oldies station on the radio: will Radiohead one day be
considered "classic rock" or even "oldies?" Mind you, I consider the
music on the local oldies station to be a specific genre/time period as
opposed to just music from X years ago.
So let's sit back, grab some nachos and [beverage of
choice], and watch some 'toons.
