would you trust spock?
In Star Trek the character of Spock is
supposed to have a purely logical brain, "unencumbered" with emotion.
Would you trust him? After all, what prompts you to trust someone?
Let's say there's a person with whom you recently became acquainted.
Thus you have no track-record of trustworthiness to encourage you; how
would you look at this person differently knowing that s/he had no
emotions?
I would not feel comfortable trusting someone off the
bat that wasn't able to feel. That would mean s/he would have no
compassion, no remorse, no shame, no love, no hate, no anger... It seems
like the only thing that would elicit trust would be the knowledge that
the scales of reason are tipping in the direction of loyalty. But without
those feelings, it's hard to imagine there being conviction or
commitment. It seems almost Machiavellian, where the ends justify the
means. Ich. I don't think Spock and I would be friends.
So while emotions are often not trustworthy, I think
they are required to make a person trustworthy.
